Rack-Mount VS Wall-Mount Rack

Rack-Mount VS Wall-Mount Rack

A server rack is a steady piece of metal designed to store various telecommunication devices and cords. Outwardly, it is a square or rectangular metal box with fasteners inside for fixing electronic equipment.

Such constructions are necessary for enterprises, all sorts of businesses, or even at home. It does not take up much space, allows accommodating hardware ergonomically, and does not stand out from the general interior.

Server Cabinet Profile

A server cabinet is a special metal box. It can be of different capacities and sizes; the product is roomy and functional enough to store all the necessary devices and information hardware. Regarding the type of installation, they distinguish wall-mount and free-standing server cabinet products. According to the design, open-frame and enclosed models are produced.

For the location of various kinds of communications inside the cabinet, there are special fasteners of various inches. The classic size is 19 inches, there are also models with 10 and 21 inches of fasteners.

Standard Cabinet Set

As a rule, the pack includes the following parts:

  • a frame, mounting rails (guides) with holes for installing devices;
  • sidewalls, doors (metal or glass) with locks, a top panel;
  • shelves, plugs to fill the unused space;
  • adjustable anti-slip legs with stabilizers, supports, leveling plinth;
  • technological openings for cables, wires with plugs;
  • horizontal and vertical blocks of sockets;
  • ground bus;
  • modules for the installation of ventilation and cooling systems.

Rack-Mount Models

This group of products is designed for installation on the floor. Thus, such products can also be called floor-standing. Here, two classes of server furniture are distinguished. System administrators can choose between open-frame racks and enclosed cabinets. Suitable models are selected depending on the needs and place of installation.

Although there are products of different capacities, the most common models are considered 24U, 30U, 36U, 42U. Since they are installed on the floor, usually, the size of models is huge enough. A big floor-standing server rack (such as 36U or 42U) can carry up to 1000kg of active and passive devices with supplementary accessories.

Wall-Mount Models

While the previous group was designed for installation on the floor, a wall-mount server rack is fastened to vertical surfaces. These are products with solid enclosures (sidewalls and locked doors). Since they are attached with special durable dowels, the carrying capacity is limited. Thus, the most common sizes are 6U, 9U, 12U, 15U.

Rack-Mount VS Wall-Mount

Now, let’s compare both products considering the main criteria set for server furniture:

  1. Size and capacity

Floor-standing furniture is suitable for both passive and active devices. Such models are more spacious and can carry heavier hardware, including servers, monitors, PCs, etc. Thus, the height of rack-mount cabinets is up to 42U (73.5 inches) and a possible load reaches 1000 kg.

Wall-mount products are more compact and designed for lighter equipment. The size of a standard wall cabinet is a maximum of 15U (26.25 inches).

  1. Form of the rack

Both groups have square or rectangular shapes. As for the body, rack-mount models can have both open-frame and enclosed designs, while wall-mount cabinets have solid enclosures.

  1. Security

Enclosed models provide a higher level of protection from all sorts of negative influences from the outside. Thus, enclosed rack-mount and wall-mount models possess equal characteristics, while open-frame rack-mount products lag behind.

  1. Ventilation and cooling

However, an open framework compensates for the lack of protection by perfect cooling properties, allowing the airflow to freely circulate through operating hardware and ventilate the system. Enclosed models require the use of forced cooling systems, such as fans.

  1. Usage

No server room or data center can go without this furniture. Open-rack furniture is perfect for closed premises, to which only authorized personnel have access. Enclosed models can be mounted anywhere, including in public places. Wall-mount products are found in stores, banks, cafes, social institutions, etc.

Also, note that wall-mount bodies are perfect for small rooms, where space is limited. In such cases, it can save floor space and provide better ergonomics for small premises.

The main purpose of each server cabinet is to store information and various network devices. In addition, metal boxes perform the function of equipment security, preventing unauthorized access by third persons and at the same time maintaining the optimum temperature level for more efficient operation of electronic equipment.

When choosing between rack-mount and wall-mount furniture and picking the best option for your needs, the main thing is to answer the following questions: what you want to accommodate inside, how much equipment to be housed, where you will place the cabinet, and in what way you will cool the system. When realizing answers to these questions, you’ll easily select the best solution.
