How to Create an Effective Work From Home Desk Setup

Thanks to technology, remote work is more accessible than ever. Every year, more and more businesses are allowing, even encouraging, their employees to work from home.

For many, working from home is a dream come true. You’re afforded a greater amount of freedom over your schedule and your workday and are able to spend less time commuting and more time on the people and activities you love most.

That said, remote work doesn’t come without challenges. And without a strong work from home desk setup, you’ll find it difficult to complete your day-to-day tasks.

Start With Your Chair

Now that we’ve gone over the importance of a designated space for working remotely, let’s talk about the most crucial element of this space: your chair. If you can only invest in one item for your work from home office, let it be your desk chair.

Maintaining good posture throughout the day is essential to both your productivity and your health. And one of the best ways to promote proper posture is by using the right chair.

At a minimum, your desk chair should provide lumbar support. That said, the best desk chair swivels, leans, supports your entire back, comes with armrests, and can be adjusted to suit your height and leg length.

Look for an Ergonomic Desk

Once you have your chair picked out, you can choose a desk to match. Your desk should be made with ergonomics in mind, meaning that your legs fit comfortably underneath and your forearms are able to rest at a 90-degree angle.

If you can, consider investing in an adjustable desk. It’s unhealthy to stay in one position for hours on end, whether that position is sitting or standing. To promote good health, it’s better to switch back and forth throughout the day.

Your desk should be large enough to fit all the essentials but not so large that the items furthest away are out of reach.

Use a Desktop Computer

We get it. Your laptop provides a level of convenience that a desktop computer can never reach. While it’s not a bad idea to have a laptop if you enjoy working from a bookstore or coffee shop occasionally, your primary workspace should include a desktop computer or monitor.

Why? Because working from a laptop puts a great deal of unnecessary strain on your neck and joints. When you work at a laptop, you’re either looking down or your arms are at an awkward angle.

Because of this, it’s important to keep your workspace as well-lit as possible throughout the day. Natural light is preferred, but if you don’t have any windows nearby, indoor lighting will work too.

Install fixtures that provide soft light but are bright enough to avoid eye strain and fatigue. Give yourself both ambient (overhead) light and a desk lamp to illuminate your workspace.

Provide Yourself With Extras

To be your happiest, and therefore most productive, you need to feel comfortable within your workspace. While having too many distractions is a mistake, so is being too austere.

In your work from home office, include things like wall and desk decor, houseplants, and a few of your favorite books to keep your mood positive. You should also consider a pair of noise-canceling headphones or speakers to enjoy music or podcasts while you work.
