In 2024, the second-generation Mazda CX-5 celebrates its 8th anniversary. It may seem like a long time ago, but the crossover is still the Mazda’s best-selling model in new and pre-owned car lots and incredibly popular. And while the CX-50 is often referred to as the CX-5’s successor, that’s not entirely true. Especially given the details recently revealed about the next-generation model. Mazda CX-5: what’s new
The updated CX-5 will play a key role in Mazda’s Phase 2 plan for the transition to hybrid powertrains for most of its models. Accordingly, the CX-5 will also receive a hybrid developed by the company itself, which is a stark contrast to the CX-50 Hybrid, assembled from Toyota components.
In addition to the new hybrid powertrain, the next-generation CX-5 will be less complex than the current model. To achieve this, Mazda is streamlining the list of options and specifications. This means customers will see a shorter trim lineup. This makes sense since Mazda currently offers the crossover in eight different versions.
In addition, Mazda is developing a new Skyactiv-Z engine, which is planned for release in 2027. The automaker did not elaborate on the plan, but according to the plan, the engine will provide perfect combustion, significantly improve driving characteristics, and demonstrate better eco-friendliness. Skyactiv-Z will be a four-cylinder successor to the current Skyactiv-G and Skyactiv-X engines. It will use a lambda constant method that guarantees high thermal efficiency due to lean combustion over a wide rpm range. At least, that’s what Mazda engineers say.
The company also confirmed its intention to simplify Mazda internal combustion engine lineup, unifying and optimizing it. Mazda’s next plan, Phase 3, will be implemented between 2028 and 2030. Little is known about it, but the company promises a full-scale launch of electric vehicles.

The Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV launched in 2012. Its design uses the “Kodo” or “Soul of Motion” philosophy, giving the car a unique modern appearance that conveys power and dynamism.
